KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – On December 1, 2014, a sweet puppy with feathery rust colored fur appeared on Local 8 News This Morning. “Willy” had been abandoned in a barn, and suffered an eye injury. The Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley was raising money to treat him.
David Toraya was watching that morning, and realized he simply couldn’t resist the puppy on the screen. “I have that sappy side to me where I feel really bad for these guys,” Toraya said.
It seemed Willy was his weakness, but little did he know the rescue dog would quickly become his strength. Toraya filled out the paperwork and brought Willy home around Christmas.
Months later, Toraya took his new best friend along to visit his brother in Atlanta. Around 6:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning, everyone in the house was asleep, except Willy. Only Willy heard the rock crashing through glass, and a stranger walking into the house. “If he didn’t wake me up that night I would have still been asleep,” Toraya said.
Willy’s whining made it clear something wasn’t right, so Toraya got up to investigate.
